Layers…because let’s face it, Fall is here and Winter comes after!
Layers are our friend and can even transform our cute summer looks into instant Fall outfits, or what many of us fashionistas call transitional dressing. Transitional dressing is a beautiful thing and it really does make life easier. It’s almost like making two wardrobes out of one. Now that’s sustainable style made easy!
As a stylist, I’ve become devoted to local finds, and as a new resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, have discovered some incredible boutiques. I recently stopped by Rare Bird to share how local and layers are your sustainable duo!
Rare Bird was founded in 2010 by artist, Erica Skone-Rees, who I got to goof around with in front of the lens while I styled some looks from her carefully curated clothing selection. Her shop is actually a boutique, gallery and studio located in Oakland, California. Rare Bird stocks mostly local wares, both contemporary and vintage, and even offers handmade clothing and jewelry, art, and hard-to-pass up décor for the home. The retro boombox featured here is one of them pieces! She truly exudes goodness and is a creative genius, who has created an inspiring shopping experience that celebrates well crafted goods. And did I mention, SO MANY beautiful clothes?
As a supporter of the slow fashion movement, Rare Bird founder Erica Skone-Rees is my kinda girl!
What exactly do I consider part of the slow fashion movement you might be wondering??? Well, just about anything you see here styled by me fits that category. Anything vintage, second hand, sustainably and ethically made and ethically made by hand – both locally and abroad.
Here I share a simple look that’s a fail-proof favorite, because denim never goes out of style. And the Fall fashion forecast predicts denim will continue on strong right through the next season, especially denim on denim looks!
The Base: My own boyfriend jeans, a braided leather belt and cashmere black tank, paired with Rare Bird’s vintage clogs. I added a vintage felt hat. I love the height of it for an extra eye-grabbing look as a style statement.
The Layer: I added a vintage denim coat with puff sleeves, which mirrors another one of Fall’s trends, the Victorian. By the way, this little denim topper would also be great over a maxi dress, a slip dress, a jumpsuit, or even under a faux fur vest for those much cooler days ahead.
The Pièce de Résistance: The MAKBUILT retro luggage boombox, made by one of Rare Bird’s in house artists, Matt. This not only completes my stylish look but makes for a stylish party; if I were to host one, I am now all set!
Thanks to Rare Bird for letting me style their impeccable selection to support slow fashion. You’ll be seeing more looks here styled by me; I’ll also be back to Rare Bird! If you are interested in more styling content by me here at Remake, please let us know in the comments exactly what you’d like to see more of, and how we can best help you with your personal style and wardrobe needs. I’ll be spending more time here in the future styling ethically, and helping people like you shop just so!
