What happened to our love affair with clothes? Is fast fashion the Tinder of style?
“Let me start with a love story. The love affair we used to have with fashion. Like that timeless little black dress, or the pair of jeans we loved so much that we repaired them. Today our relationship with fashion is more like Tinder. Quantity over quality,” said Ayesha Barenblat, the founder of Remake in kicking off our Fashion + Social justice conversation in San Francisco, this past Thursday, to a packed room at Impact Hub.
This panel was a part of Remake’s Fashion + Social Justice roadshow to bring you the stories of the incredible and resilient millennial women who make our clothes such as Rubina in Pakistan and Ming in China.
The fashion industry is run by women – Anna Wintour, Kendall Jenner, celebrities like Beyonce who endorse and design lines. The thing is, 80% of the fashion supply chain is also filled with millions of women. Most in their early twenties.
At Remake we seek to unmask her. To release her from the media’s depiction of a forgotten victim in a sweatshop faraway. We want you to re-meet her, the woman who makes your clothes, in a fundamentally different way. We’ve been traveling around the world meeting her, sitting down for meals, visiting her in factories and bringing her story to you. We hope that once you see, meet and get to know her in this more textured way. You will care about her.
Our all women panel included Kim Almeida who runs Levi Strauss Foundation’s Worker Well-being portfolio. San Francisco based Levi Strauss and Company created the world’s first ever pair of jeans in 1873 and prides in constantly pioneering. Today Kim leads their efforts to not just legally comply but improve the lives of the people who make their iconic jeans.
Steph Cordes, Vice Chair of the Cordes Foundation shared her family foundation’s focus to invest in ethical fashion brands like Soko and help build the slow fashion movement with grantees such as Remake and Fair Trade USA.
The panel was moderated by Amanda Brock, Executive Director of Spark, a leading network of millennial philanthropists working together to advance gender equality.
There was standing room only with a mix of locally based slow fashion brand founders, bloggers, fashion designers and fashionistas engaged and wanting to know more.
